    The story behind the character

    What Is Scabby the Rat?

Scabby the Rat is a giant inflatable cartoon rat associated with labor demonstrations. Unions use the character to draw attention to a dispute and invite people to ask what workers are protesting. It is a symbol, not an explanation of every issue at a particular event.

What does the union rat mean?

Reporting by the Chicago Reader describes Scabby appearing in disputes involving contracts, wages, and nonunion labor. The rat makes the demonstration noticeable while organizers explain the circumstances. Seeing one outside a building does not, by itself, establish the facts of a dispute or prove that a particular party has broken the law.

The name is linked to the labor term “scab,” commonly used for a strikebreaker. “Scabby,” “union rat,” and “inflatable rat” are often used in discussion of this protest tradition. Products carrying those descriptions can differ in design and size; the name alone does not identify a particular manufacturer or model.

Where did the name come from?

The Chicago Reader reports on Local 150 newspaper records documenting a rat-naming contest in November 1989 and the selection of “Scabby” the following year. Member Lou Mahieu is credited with the winning name. Accounts of the early inflatable designs and who originated them differ, so a single simple invention story would leave out that uncertainty.

Those historical accounts describe the broader labor symbol. They are not claims that Union Inflatables invented Scabby, supplied the historical inflatables, or is endorsed by any union mentioned in the reporting. The sources below provide background, not a certification of our products.

A character still needs a clear message

For organizers considering a display, start with the issue you want the public to understand. Pair the character with accurate signs, a clear explanation, and people who can answer questions. A recognizable symbol can be part of a campaign without replacing the workers’ own account of their concerns.

For visitors who simply encountered Scabby on the street, the most useful next step is to read the accompanying material or ask the organizers what that particular demonstration is about.

    Questions before your next step

Is Scabby always used during a strike?

No. The reporting cited here describes a range of labor demonstrations and disputes. Ask the organizers about the specific event rather than inferring its purpose from the character alone.

Does the name identify one size or supplier?

No. The term is used for the broader protest symbol. Review the exact product listing and confirm its specifications instead of treating the name as a technical description.
